A kitchen can be easily updated by simply replacing the cabinet door handles, an interior stylist has said.

Writing for femalefirst.co.uk, Theoda Solms Iles says that people can be surprised at what a difference a small change to a room can make. As well as replacing handles, she also recommends painting the cabinet doors.

"Cream, grey, charcoal, sage green or pale blue are all popular choices and work well in kitchens," she notes. "Make sure to take the handles off, sand down the wood and apply the right specialist paint for the job.

"If your doors are too shabby to save, often the carcass of the kitchen is still fine. Just replace the doors with new ones, most doors fit standard kitchen carcasses, but do double-check first."

Brie Dyas, senior editor of huffingtonpost.com style and home, also states there a number of simple and cheap ways to update the kitchen, such as hanging up artwork, fitting new blinds and, if there's space, adding a temporary island.

Ms Iles adds that copper can really update the look of a kitchen, so homeowners might like to think about replacing their current pots and pans with new copper ones. It's also possible to get kettles, mixers and toasters in copper effect too.

She says that both modern and traditional kitchens can 'rock' this look, and homeowners who choose to get copper appliances shouldn't hide them away, but keep them on display.
