Doors
What is a lever/lever handle?

A handle set comprising a lever on the inside and a lever on the outside.

What is a lever/pad handle?

A handle comprising a lever on the inside of the door and a compact pad on the outside.

How do I remove the handle from the door?

It’s very simple.

With the door in the open position just unscrew the fixing screws that are located on the inside face of the back plate using a Philips screwdriver (in most cases there are two fixing screws but occasionally three). When releasing the screws be aware that the handle lever and plate on the outside will work loose so be prepared to hold things together with one hand! The levers will slide off the spindle (s) or can be pulled apart gently. Keep all the parts together and don’t let the door shut until you are ready to replace the handle unit.

How do I know if my handle is right-handed or left-handed?

View the door from the inside.
Right handed - if the handle is on the left side of the door.
Left handed - if the door handle is on the right side of the door.

Can the handles be used for aluminium or timber windows?

Yes they can. However, the locks must be of a similar nature to that found on a PVC-U door and the only other difference will be the door thickness. Provided you supply the door thickness correctly and check the positioning of the fixing and key-hole centres then there should be no problem.

Why doesn’t my new handle fit properly?

There are several key sizes that must be determined when changing your handles. You will need to re-check these from the ‘Suitability’ pages on this website.

The key sizes are the fixing centres, lever and key-hole dimensions and the thickness of the door. The latter establishes the length of spindle needed.

How important is it to get the sizes accurate?

Very.
There are several ways you could approach this and remember that it is millimetre (mm) measurements required:
Measure the basic centre positions while the handle is fixed to the door using a ruler or tape measure, or
Take the handle off and measure from behind the backplate, or
Take the handle off and draw around the backplate with a fine pencil on a piece of paper and measure it.
My handle sags when fitted?

Many handles are supplied with a spring cassette that helps to bring the handle lever to a horizontal position. Ensure that if this cassette is made available with your handle that it is inserted correctly within the backplate. Some handles will not have a spring mechanism and will be sold as an unsprung handle (check product details before purchase). If this is the case you can only rely on the lock spring to hold the position of the handle correctly and this should be the case in the vast majority. If your lock mechanism is fairly old there is a chance that the spring may have deteriorated and when used with an unsprung handle you will remain with a sagging handle. The only solution is to purchase a sprung handle or to replace the lock.

Why are there two spindles within my handle?

These are most usually found on the front door handles and isolate the inside handle from the outside handle.

How do you measure the door thickness?

When the door is open measure from the inside face of the opening door to the outside. This is the distance between the handle on the inside and the handle on the outside measured in millimetres. This needs to be reasonably accurate (within 3mm say).

Can I change from a pad to a lever?

Yes you can but there are fewer options, if any, in some cases. Some pads have two spindles and therefore you will need a lever/lever off-set type.

Are there handles available with 3 fixing screws?

Yes. Primarily there are 3 fixing positions to further enhance the security of the door. The vast majority of handles have two fixing positions and therefore there will be a limited number of designs available with 3 fixing screws. Send an email with as many details of the hole positions as possible and we will do our best to find you a direct replacement. Customerservices@handlestore.com

Is there an extended lever version?

Extended handles are available at a special request. Send an email with as many details of the hole positions as possible and we will do our best to find you a direct replacement.

Why is a French door handle different?

French door handles will be sent as a complete set of two pairs. One handle will be used for the main door and this will have the key-hole lock. The other door known as the slave door will have no key hole and this will be the only difference when viewing the handles apart from any handed positions i.e. left or right handed. You can use standard Lever/Lever handles but you will have to accept that both backplates will have key-hole cut-outs.

What can I use to clean the handles?

Care should be applied when cleaning handles.

Door handles can often be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. If further cleaning is needed use a mild solution of warm, soapy water on a soft cloth and dry thoroughly afterwards.
To prolong the serviceable life of the handle, care must be taken not to scratch or damage the surfaces of the handle. Do not use wire wool or scouring agents.

Windows
Espag
What is an espag handle?

The espag handle drives window lock mechanisms and is identified by a protruding square spindle out of the back of the handle that engages into the lock and upon turning locks or releases the window.

Espag is short for the French word espagnolette and really took off in the UK during the 1980’s with the growth of PVC-U window frames.

In France this term has been used to describe “a locking mechanism of a form comprising a pair of rods, controlled by a knob mechanism, having hooked ends that engage catches in the head and sill of a French window or such like”.

Various forms of locking mechanisms applied to PVC-U windows fall loosely under the heading of espag. To you and I this can be roller cam locks, mushroom headed locks or shoot-bolt locking systems that wrap around the perimeter of an opening sash to improve the security or weather performance of the window.

What is spindle length?

This is the length in millimetres (mm) from the underside of the handle to the end of the spindle. There are a number of different sizes available per handle type.
espag

Do spindle lengths have to be accurately measured?

You have to be certain that the spindle engages through the locking mechanism gearbox. It is possible to use a slightly longer length but you must make sure that it is not too long, otherwise the handle will not sit down on your frame. Test the depth by inserting a small implement of a pencil size through the hole in the frame until it can be inserted no further. This is the very maximum length you can use.

When fitting a new handle the back plate does not sit down flat on the frame?
There could be two main reasons:

1.
Spindle too long – you will need to re-check the length of the protruding spindle. It is not recommended that you attempt to shorten this as the material is hardened and difficult to cut. Such spindles require a certain amount of strength to overcome the torque and resistance to move the locking mechanism that in time may become more frictional. You will need to reorder the correct size.
2.
The holes in the PVC-U frame are not large enough – you may need to open up the two holes on the surface of the frame to accommodate location lugs. These are usually 10mm in diameter. Location lugs are much more the norm these days to ensure a much better location.
When I try to open the window the handle catches the frame and restricts me from opening the window
On some very narrow frames there may be a conflict when using some handles with a bulky design. If this is the case, contact Customerservices@handlestore.com to receive advice on possible alternative handle designs.

How do I know if my handle is right-handed or left-handed?

Cockspur
What is a cockspur handle?

A cockspur handle is the simplest handle design available for a PVC-U window and was the most common type of handle during the early days. A cockspur works on the principle of the handle nose moving across a wedge in a closing position to pull the sash of the window tight against the frame. It is usual for two handles to be used on the sash to ensure that the window is pulled tight against its seals for weather performance.

What is step size?

This is the distance in millimetres (mm) from the back face of the handle that sits on the frame to the underside of the cockspur nose.

My handle does not close properly

In the first instance you must be sure that you have replaced your existing handle with the correct step size. There is the possibility to adjust the tightness by changing the plastic moulded wedge to a smaller size (usually by 1mm increments).

What can I use to clean the handles?

Care should be applied when cleaning handles.

Window handles can often be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. If further cleaning is needed use a mild solution of warm, soapy water on a soft cloth and dry thoroughly afterwards.

Tilt & Turn
I cannot find the screw fixing holes in the handle

The screw fixing holes are concealed under a cover plate. You may notice a small impression at the top and bottom of the base plate and using your fingers just lift the cover and swivel the plate to reveal the holes for fixing.

Letter Boxes
What do I need to know before replacing a letter-box on a uPVC door?

You need to establish the following:

The width of the letter-plate – 10 inch or 12 inch
The height of the letter plate – slimline (50mm) or standard (70mm)
The aperture size (see below) – the aperture should be OK if you have established the above but check anyway.

How do I fit the new letter-box?

First of all you need to take the old letter-box off the door. You can do this very simply by lifting and holding the internal letter plate upright and unscrewing the screws which you will see inside the box at each side end. As you are unscrewing the fixings you may notice that the letter-box becomes very loose and it may be as well at this point to have someone hold the letterbox on the outside to avoid it falling to the ground when you fully release the screws. The letter plate can then be pulled apart from the inside and outside. Keep it safe for now until you finish installing the new letter plate and you are perfectly satisfied.

The fitting of the new letter-box is the direct reverse of the above. Only you must make sure that you fit things the right way around and in the right order. It may be useful to have some one help you by holding the letterbox in place whilst tightening the fixings unless you can successfully reach the outside and inside at the same time!

Unpack the letter-box carefully and be sure to protect the surfaces from any unduly scratches that may occur during installation. Now decide which is the inside plate and there are several.

Ways to identify this:

  • the side with the brush seal inside the plate
  • the side whose plate opens least
  • holes for the screws inside the letter plates not screw ports

When installed the screw heads should always be on the inside of the door.

Now that you know which is the inside plate ensure that the gasket is used on the external side of the door and bring the two halves of the letter-box together in the door (make sure that the flaps are the right way up and not upside down!). You will find that the black sleeves will slide into each other and you are ready to screw the two halves together with the screws provided. Be careful not to over-tighten but ensure a good solid fit and contact is made each side of the door.

Can I use a slimline letter-box to replace my existing standard letter-box?

No. The slimline letter-box was produced for a very narrow centre midrail frame. If you try to fit one into a standard size 12” letter-box opening it will not cover the aperture (hole cut-out) through the door. They only come in a 12” size and should only be used to replace the same narrow letter-box. Check the sizes before ordering.

What is aperture size?

This is the size of the hole that is cut through your door to accept the letter-box. So if you take the letter-box off the door completely you will see a hole in the form of a slot and this should be just big enough to accept your new letter-box sleeve. You can check the size of the aperture required to receive the new letter-boxes by studying the General Details page for the individual letter-box.

What is the difference between a mid-rail and a panel?

A mid-rail is the horizontal frame that spans the middle of the door. Usually there is glass above it and a panel below it.

A panel can be a full length or half-length and is usually about 25-30mm thick. It fits within the opening frame of the door instead of a glass unit.

How do I measure the door thickness?

Open the letter-box and drop a tape measure through to measure from the external letter plate to the internal letter plate and take off the thickness of the plates internal and external.

What can I use to clean the letter plates?

Care should be applied when cleaning letter-plates.

Letter-plates can often be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. If further cleaning is needed use a mild solution of warm, soapy water on a soft cloth and dry thoroughly afterwards.

To prolong the serviceable life of the letter-plate, care must be taken not to scratch or damage the surfaces of the letter-plate. Do not use wire wool or scouring agents.
Door Knockers
How do I know a new door-knocker will fit?

Just measure the distance between the centres of the two holes on your existing door-knocker and make sure that you check the General Details page to ensure that the bolts line up. That’s it

How do I fit a new door-knocker?

Just unscrew the two bolts from the inside and push through to dislodge from the door.

How is the viewer fitted to the door-knocker?

Very simply, the viewer comes in two main parts that connect via a thread (viewer and a sleeve). Insert the viewer part through the door-knocker and the sleeve part from the inside of the door. The two can then be screwed together by hand until tight and then carefully use a screwdriver for the final half-turn. The door viewers have a certain amount of adjustment for different panel sizes.

What can I use to clean the door-knockers?

Care should be applied when cleaning door-knockers. Brass has a tendency to tarnish over time and particularly more so in outdoor environments. All door-knockers are lacquered and care must be applied to clean such items. We would generally advise using a soft dry cloth. If further cleaning is needed use a mild solution of warm, soapy water on a soft cloth and dry thoroughly afterwards.

To prolong the life of the door-knocker, care must be taken not to scratch or damage the surfaces of the knocker. Do not use wire wool or scouring agents.
Numerals
How do I fit the numerals?

Use the screws provided and if necessary drill a very small pilot hole in the position that you require.

What can I use to clean the door-numerals?

Care should be applied when cleaning door-numerals. Brass has a tendency to tarnish over time and particularly more so in outdoor environments. All door-numerals are lacquered and care must be applied to clean such items. We would generally advise using a soft dry cloth. If further cleaning is needed use a mild solution of warm, soapy water on a soft cloth and dry thoroughly afterwards.

To prolong the life of the door-numerals, care must be taken not to scratch or damage the surfaces of the knocker. Do not use wire wool or scouring agents.

Trickle Vents
Does the internal vent come with the external canopy?

No. However, the website allows you select the correct matching canopy or trickle vent and to order at the same time.

What do I need to know before replacing a trickle vent or canopy?

You need to ensure that the size of the new vent is compatible with your old vent and/or the slot underneath the vent. The best way to check this is to take the existing vent off the window. Vents are usually attached by a series of small lugs that clip-fit into a slot or by two fixing screws. If the vent is clip-fixed you will need to carefully rock and prise the vent away from the slot.

When you take the existing vent off the window you will see a slot or two slots cut through your window.

Measure the slot length and width (if two slots then measure the complete span across both including the middle part). The width will be quite narrow but ensure that you measure it accurately.

Each of the trickle vents shown on the website have a series of drawings with sizes to help you find the correct vent.

Check the following:
The width of your slot against the ‘to suit frame slot size of …’
The overall length of the slot against the screw fixing points size (ensure there is enough room past the slot at each end to get a screw into the frame.
The overall length of the vent fits onto the window or opening sash.

How do I fit the new trickle vent or canopy?

Initially just offer the vent up to the slot on your window and check the vent actually covers the slots and sits flush onto the frame.

Handlestore only supply vents that can be screw fixed onto your existing frame. You may have screw-fixing points already that can be re-utilised, or it is more likely that you will have to drill two new holes. Drilling into a plastic frame is easy but you need to ensure that you have marked the position of the fixing points carefully. The best way to do this is to hold the vent in its position and then drop a pencil into the fixing holes to make a mark. All of our vents are provided with the correct screws for uPVC frames but you will need to use a ??mm drill for the screw to tighten correctly.

It is recommended that you screw the vent down into position using a hand screwdriver not a drill or any other mechanically/electrically operated device. The screws will appear quite tight but this is important to cut a suitable thread into the plastic. Provided you don’t over-tighten the screws the vent will be adequately fixed.

When fixing the external canopy to the frame you may wish to consider running a small amount of silicone around the canopy. The canopy design has a small slot around the edge of the vent specifically for this purpose (recommended).

All vents and canopies are provided with two cover caps to disguise the screws and finish off the installation by simply pushing into place.

How do I fit a cord operated trickle vent?

The cord-operated trickle vents are easier to fit than they first look. Each vent is supplied with a complete set of instructions to guide you through the simple process of fitting the vent in place.

Very simply the vent itself is spring-loaded and is opened by the flick of a lever through a pulley block that is screwed into the corner of the window. The real benefit of this system is that you can control the vent from a low-level height in those hard to reach places.

Can cord operated vents replace my existing conventional vent?

Yes they can. Where ever you have an existing vent the cord vent can easily be installed as a replacement.

My new vent does not sit down flat onto the frame?

The new vent will contain a series of lugs that need to go inside the slot in your window. It is most likely that the new vent is too big for the slot and you need a narrower vent.

Should the vent be open all the time?

Yes they should. The purpose of a trickle vent is to provide permanent ventilation into rooms. There are building regulations that cover the exact amount of free flowing air into rooms and these must be maintained. Should you get a gas or carbon monoxide leak these vents could play an important part in saving your life! Trickle vents also help reduce condensation and reduce mould growth caused by dampness.

Handlestore trickle vents are designed to allow for adjustment of the air-flow direction. So to avoid direct drafts you can tilt the vent upwards or downwards as required.

Under no circumstances should you block the vent.

Do trickle vents require any maintenance?

The important thing is to periodically check for any blockage that may occur. The external canopy of the vent is designed to stop insect migration and other foreign matter getting into the vent.

What materials are the vents and canopies made from?

The trickle vent is a thermoplastic moulding made from a UV stable grade of PBTP (PolyButylene TerePhthalate) and POM (PolyOxyMethylene). This material gives excellent properties in strength and rigidity (with spring like qualities) as well as resistance to wear and organic solvents.

The canopy is made from uPVC and like your windows has excellent weathering properties.

Are the vents tested?

Handlestore supply vents that are made by a recognised UK market-leading manufacturer. All of their vents are tested in-house and externally to BS 6375 Part 1 – 1989 – “Performance of windows – classification for weathertightness”
Door key cylinders
What is a door key cylinder?

This is a separate part of the lock that can be changed easily – sometimes referred to as the ‘door barrel’. It is a self-contained unit that when in place turns the actual lock and its component parts into place.

Why should I change my existing cylinder?

Doors that have been fitted some years ago are fitted with the older style cylinders that have little in the way of in-built security features. Today’s cylinders have enhanced security features such as anti-pick and anti-drill features built into the design as standard.

How easy is it to fit a new key cylinder?

Very easy. One screw located at the side of the door will release the cylinder. Consult the door key cylinders web page - “Show me how to uninstall the door cylinder”. The whole process can take only a few minutes!

The only other thing you need to know is the size of the cylinder and again this can be found on the door key cylinders web page - “Show me how to measure sizes”.

As long as you have the right screwdriver and the key to the door anybody can take out the cylinder. The most difficult part of the process can be to take the screw out (apply care to the head of the screw if tight and do not use a drill screwdriver – hand only).

Will the key cylinder fit my uPVC door?

I want to replace several door key cylinders with the same key. Can this be done?

Yes it can. Contact Customer Services on 08707 60 22 59 and they will advise the prices and lead-time. Unfortunately this cannot be done on the website just yet and the cylinders are specially made up for you (not as expensive as it sounds). As long as the cylinder shape design is the same then you can replace the cylinders for your patio door, french door and entrance doors with one single key!
Patio door handles
How do I remove the handle from the door?

It’s very simple.

Although there are different design handles they are usually removed by finding the two screws that hold the inner and outer handles together.

How do I know if the patio handle will fit my door?

Check the details of the fixing hole positions and the key-hole if relevant. The details are shown on the general details page for each handle.

How do I know if my handle is right-handed or left-handed?

View the door from the inside.

Right handed - if the handle is on the left side of the door and the door slides to the right.

Left handed - if the handle is on the right side of the door and the door slides to the left.

Do you provide snib levers with sliding door handles?

Yes we do if it is relevant to the handle and lock design. The screws are also provided and any caps where specified. Check the general details of each handle for exact details.

Can the handles be used for aluminium or timber patio doors?

Yes they can. Provided you check the positioning of the fixing and key-hole centres then there should be no problem.

Friction Hinges
How easy is it to replace a hinge?

Once you know the correct sizes and type of hinge you require (all information available on the web page) the whole replacement can be done in ten minutes or less. However, always have a second person available to help with the weight of the window.

What do I need to know in order to replace a hinge on my window?

In the first instance you need to select the hinge you would like to fit. If you use the prompts on the relevant web page it will tell you what you need to know for each hinge and through the pop-up’s you can see the diagrams you need to make the correct selections. Everything you require will be sent with the hinge including a guide to check and set the hinge depth correctly.

What tips would you give me when installing the new hinges?

Always have two people available that are capable of holding the weight of the window. Do not underestimate how heavy a double glazed window really is.
When fitting the H02, H03 or H04 hinges, ensure that the hinges are opened in the direction of the arrow only. This corresponds to the direction of the window opening and ensures that you have the hinge on the correct side of the window. The H01 can be used either way around due to their design and so no arrows are shown on the hinge.
Make sure that the first fixing hole in the corner lines up on the new hinge and the window otherwise the window will be out of line (generally standard size).
When the opening window is removed drop it onto your bathroom scales and check its weight corresponds with the weights given on this website, or the instruction sheet supplied, for your hinge. If you have triple glazing these hinges will not be strong enough to carry the weight. Check with Technical Support.
Have some repair screws handy.

Can these hinges be fitted to other types of frames other than UPVC?

They can be fitted to timber and aluminium windows with friction scissor hinges already in place. Traditional timber windows with butt hinges will not accept these type of hinges without modification to the opening window. Aluminium windows with friction hinges are usually held in place by rivets.

What is a standard hinge?

This is the most common hinge that simply opens your window. Most standard hinges are known as easy clean and this relates to the action of the hinge i.e. the opener comes across the window creating a gap that allows you to reach the outside of the window.

Can I fit restricted hinges in place of a standard hinge?

Yes you can provided the track width is 18mm wide and the length of hinge is available.
Please note that side hung window hinges have one restrictor on the bottom hinge and top hung windows have restricted hinges on each side of the window. The latter is important for safety reasons should someone fall against the window (please be aware that some websites sell only one restricted hinge per pair on a top hung window and this is an extremely dangerous practice with a top hung window).

What screws should I use to fix the hinges to the frames?

We recommend that you use the existing screws as these should be the correct pitch and length to re-tighten. If the screw thread will not tighten it is possible to use repairs screws that can be purchased from the website under Accessories. Under no circumstances use a screw from a DIY outlet without the correct specification being observed. The wrong screws can lead to corrosion.

What is a standard hinge?

This is the most common hinge that simply opens your window. Most standard hinges are known as easy clean and this relates to the action of the hinge i.e. the opener comes across the window creating a gap that allows you to reach the outside of the window.

Is there any maintenance required?

When you first install the hinges it is recommended that you put one drop of light-grade lubrication oil onto each hinge point - and always keep the slide track free from dirt and grime.

It is good practice to clean, lubricate and check the tightness of all screws/rivets every twelve months.

How can I improve the security of the hinged side of the window?

Check out the ‘Enhanced Window Security’ brackets under Accessories. These can easily be fitted to the hinged side of the window and significantly reinforce the window security at that side of the opener.

What weights are the hinges designed to carry?

Generally speaking if the length of the hinge is replaced with a ‘like for like’ length size on a double glazed residential type window the weight should be OK. However, it is always worth a check when you have taken the opening window out to drop it on a set of bathroom scales for re-assurance. If the weight of the window is greater than the weights given by the manufacturers then seek guidance from Technical Support before commencing with replacement. An instruction sheet showing the weights for each hinge size is supplied.

Window Safety Restrictors
Do the safety restrictors provide security to an open window?

No. Restrictors are designed to limit the amount of opening to avoid people accidentally falling from windows above ground level. An open window can never be treated as secure.

Are the restrictors child-safe?

There are several options available that make it more awkward for children to manipulate the restrictor device. The R02 is designed for a two-hand/two finger operation, the R03 is a fixed restrictor (no release) and the R04 is key-locking. The restrictor should be positioned on the window to ensure the air gap is no greater than 100mm (10cm), the size of a child’s head.

Why do you recommend two restrictors on a top hung window (window hinged from the top)?

If someone should accidentally fall against a window the unrestricted side may be forced wider on its hinges at that side and open the gap of the window further. One restrictor each side will provide a sturdy brace and also avoid over-stressing the hinge on the unrestricted side.

Where should I fit a window restrictor?

Restrictors should be fitted to any window you consider is a safety risk. This may be a children’s room or particularly large windows above ground level. However, consider the points below ‘What do I need to know’.

What do I need to know?

Some key points to be aware of:

Ensure that the window is not used as a fire-escape.
Ensure that all adult occupants are aware of the device and understand how to release the restrictor.
Any keys supplied with a restrictor should be kept in a safe and identifiable place for all adult occupants.
If using the R03 restrictor please note that this device is non-releasable and requires the removal of fixing screws to open the window fully.
All restrictors should be fitted to windows to create an opening air gap no greater than 100mm(10 centimetres) for child safety.
Restrictors do not improve the security of your window.
Two restrictors should be placed on top hung windows either side of the opening window (LH and RH).

How easy are the restrictors to fit?

You will need to mark out and drill fixing holes carefully in the correct position for the device to operate. A full installation sheet is provided with each restrictor.

Do the restrictors hold the window in a fixed stay position?

Only the R03 is capable of doing this via two screws on the friction slide pad.
