A lot of timber windows have angled frames but most of the window stays we provide all come with the options for flat and angled frame fittings. The stays will generally overcome the  draughtseals between the windows unless these are excessively large.

Window Stays

Can often be referred to as peg stays and are usually found on the older window designs right back to period styles. Window stays are designed to hold the window open and keep them open to a number of pre-defined gaps. Nowadays PVC windows rely on the hinge itself to keep the window open under its own weight (friction stays). This works well for side hung windows but not so for top hung windows that can be quite large and heavy and invariably fall down to closure. This is where the window stay comes into its own for timber windows.

Timber windows are usually held in place by a pair of butt hinges of one sort or another and this can be an advantage as the window will open much wider, particularly important for fire-escape openings. The window stay is important for keeping the window open and braced against closure. No wander then that timber window manufacturers over the years have maintained window stays as an integral part of their design.

The nice thing with a timber window is the sense of traditionalism that is being maintained.  Over the years the styles of windows have stayed the same but with ever evolving manufacturing techniques the windows are more precisely made and the search for higher quality window hardware keeps evolving. Window stays these days are made to georgian, Regency, contemporary and antique styles to name a few and come in all the colours including polished chrome window stays which are very popular for the modern day window.

Moving with the times means that window stays also need to make the window more secure, hence the use of integral locks to the stays. These can usually be matched to the window fasteners so one key fits all. Some types of window stay like the peg stay can also use a window lock. This can be easily achieved by swapping one of the pins for the new locking pin.
