Cockspur handles have for some time now been the simplest and most popular form of window handles for new and old windows. These handles close onto a small 'ramp' shaped cockspur handle wedge block that is fitted opposite the handle on aluminium and uPVC windows. You need to measure the 'step height' of your handle to be able to replace it correctly (see picture below).

The wedge block can be removed by prising from the window - two small integral lugs push into holes in the window.

Cockspur handles are found on uPVC and aluminium windows but must not be confused with window latches found on timber windows. Although similar designs the timber window latches close into a block as opposed to closing over a block as found on this page.

It might be useful to know..

Aluminium double glazing with cockspur handles fitted usually require a 9mm step size handle. They can also be fitted to the window using rivets and if this is the case you will have to replace your cockspur handles in the same way. This will require a hand riveter from a local DIY store.  Screws will not do as you should ensure the thread exceeds 1.5 x the screw diameter (about 6mm wall thickness is needed). If this is not the case the cockspur handles will not stay fixed to the frame for very long.

uPVC windows will use various step size cockspur handles although the most popular is 21mm.

Some Anglian window cockspur handles dating back 30 years were fixed to a bracket that is fixed via the underside of the frame. When you dismantle this configuration it will leave a slot in the window and this can be covered by the base plate of the W10 cockspur handle to give 2 or 3 fixing points.

If you have the cockspur window handles with a small nib on the end of the nose then these are very difficult to replace and you may have to consider something like a Frame Guard as added security.
